The Night Swimmer by Matt Bondurant
4.0
I'm touched by the story's characters and setting. The writer is very good at conveying the place and describing characters that are complex; revealing them in numerous snapshots that leave an impression of their essential qualities. I loved the ideas explored, especially the Fastnet lighthouse and coastal history. I'm still digesting the whole thing but my impression upon finishing it is that it's a well written and beautifully told modern faerie tale. I was at times terrified by the harshness depicted but it was effective at conveying a sense of dread and I trusted that the author saw so much good in humanity (especially with the narrator's voice) that we wouldn't end up in a completely desolate place.
