I read this as a bedtime read aloud with my 8 year old son and 10 year old daughter. While I wouldn't say this was a favorite of theirs, they stayed engaged and never complained when it was storyline.
I really liked it because we also homeschool and are currently wrapping up medieval time period. It's a little dark with orphan kids treated the way you would expect in this time and my daughter was really upset when they almost drowned the cat. But it's also a great look at a peasant village, not lords and knights, and how apprenticeships work.
Skip this if you have sensitive kiddos, but mine were just fine.
