The intro in the present felt very My Immortal but I enjoyed the flashback/bulk of the book set in the past. I was pleasantly surprised by how explicitly queer this book was, especially considering the first book was largely subtextual. Some characters are very unlikable and there are quite a few disturbing sequences, both regarding blood/gore and thinly-veiled sexual violence.
