Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

4.0

Recently I have been drifting away from YA books but once I’m a while there is a story with so much heart and passion that I can’t help but fall in love.

Blanca & Roja is the story of two sisters that are destined to lose each other when the swans takes one of them away. The love between the two sisters is what makes the book special. The pages are full with understanding and loyalty (even during frustrating moments of miscommunication).

This is also a great book to introduce younger audiences to the idea of colorism in Latin American culture. The differential treatment between the sisters due to the color of their skin (despite having similar features) is very well written. Especially with the desire to be with a “blue eyed” man in order to further enhance “white features”. The book presented a racial dynamic that felt very similar to my own experiences growing up in PR as well as around other Latin American cultures.

I enjoyed Yearling and Page but I was never fully invested in them. Especially Page, I wanted a bit more about her beyond her existence as a boy.

I highly recommend this book!
