The Library Book by Susan Orlean

5.0

It might be that after attending the inaugural LA Times Book Club event where Susan Orlean spoke about the years-long process of writing this book, persons involved in the saving of the downtown LA library spoke on their experience, and journalists spoke on the role public spaces, especially libraries, play in the homeless discourse turned a I really like it review into an I LOVE IT review.

I loved the mix of unsolved crime, (Orlean talked a lot about how she was determined that the research and journalism she was doing on the book would solve the crime! - it didn't, and she explains the why and how), history of the LA public library from inception to present day, the horror of the loss of a library's worth of books to the April 29, 1986 fire, and the explanations about how modern libraries are way more than just book depositories. Any book lover needs to read this book.
