The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

5.0

This book is just short of genius. Atwood's distopia is realistic and terrifying. Her prose is lyrical and sad, strong, voluptuous, and is the best sort of complement to the story, which is excruciating in its honesty and straightforward approach to a complex and terrifying world that grows from the realities of history and human nature.

Claire Danes does a wonderful job and I'm glad that this edition was my introduction to a book I'll surely read more than once. I'll be putting this on my list of recommended reading for my creative writing students, especially--though not exclusively--the young women.
