La tresse by Laetitia Colombani
3.0

2.5 How it started: Curious about the 3 story lines, enjoyed the vividly described scenes (the author's script writing experience comes through). I was most curious about Smita in Badlapur, medium about Giulia in Palermo, least for Sarah in Montreal. The 3 stories are very like episodes, even to the point of ending with a cliff hanger and starting with a little bit of repetition to remind the reader where we left off.
How it went: The action advances slowly and cycles through the 3 stories in turn. I got impatient with the pace and then irritated with some of the images: when Sarah faints she crumples like the Twin Towers on Sept 11, and Guilia's family's business was in trouble like the Costa Concordia. Seriously?
In the end, I appreciated the weaving/writing metaphor (especially interstitial poems) and the different forms the three women's courage takes.
