Plant Dreaming Deep: A Journal by May Sarton

4.0

this was such a sweet read! i really enjoyed my time spent reading journal of a solitude last fall, and wanted to pick up another of may sarton’s nonfiction books to kick off the season this year. although it has the subtitle “a journal”, plant dreaming deep is written in a more traditional memoir style, not chronological journal entries. it talks about the circumstances that led may sarton to purchase her home in nelson, new hampshire, her renovation of the rundown old farmhouse, and the new way of life she adapted to in the small village. full of nature writing, small town vibes, and cozy descriptions of her home, it’s the perfect fall read. sarton captures the simple joys of living in the farmhouse, as well as the hardships she faced  and the community members that helped her through. overall, a super quick, cozy read. i think i’ll make reading a sarton memoir my new fall tradition!

“The house stayed by me, full of light, yet solid.
However many ashes had to be raked out,
However many childish hopes were shed,
I learned from grief and learned to make my bed.
This was a life claim I was staking out.“
