I really love that this isn’t a typical romance and it wasn’t at all what I was expecting. It was an #ownvoices book about Eva Mercy (Genevieve) who is a smutty/vampire author, who struggles with chronic pain from migraines. Eva now has a teenage daughter, who lives with her father in the summers on the west coast; while Shane mentors and teaches teens, but never had a child. Years ago, she had a passionate relationship with Shane, also a successful author, until one night, everything went wrong and they never saw each other again. Until this night for an author panel, and faced with each other, all their memories come back.

This was a perfect buddy read with friends. There are sections for each day of the week - from Sunday to Sunday, so it’s kind of fun to read that day. We all enjoyed it!

So glad it is The Gloss selection for February!

“They’ll tell you you’re an animal, but you’re not. You’re a sane person reacting to an insane situation. And I know, ’cause I been you. It took me getting locked up three times by twelfth grade to learn the lesson that you’re gonna learn today.” P42

Besides an incredible relationship with her teenage daughter, she has a complicated relationship with her mother. Lines like this caught me by surprise and really made me laugh (even within difficult times):

“I know you suffered, my bè. But what could I do? I prayed for you; I still pray for you. But you can’t fight a curse. I been tellin’ you to get some houseplants.”p231

“Something had been unlocked in her. For so long and in so many ways, Eva had been holding herself back. Now she wanted to figure out who she was—and then be her, delight in her. Delight in everything! Have an actual life and live it! She vowed to herself to be honest—with herself and with everyone. In pain? Admit it. In love? Claim it. Life was too short to be anything but herself.” P247
