What FUN! I really, really enjoyed this book.

I must admit, the reason I am not giving it 5 stars is simply because, in the beginning, I felt there was a decent amount of info-dumping, and I found myself thinking of other things outside of the book! I don't know why this happened, but it just took some time to get into. Once I hit about the 30-40% mark, though, I was IN IT, and was fully invested.

We follow Amina Al-Sirafi, a retired pirate living with her lovely daughter, Marjana. Amina has found peace with retirement until someone shows up asking demanding Amina to help her find her daughter and how she chose Amina because of her infamous name as nakhudha - a ship captain.

The characters in this, particularly Amina and Raksh, are SO layered; plus, the side characters are all so fantastic. I really enjoyed all the characters' depth and development. Amina is one hell of a character - she's a nakhudha, mother, and friend, and somehow manages to balance them all in a nontraditional and beautiful way. The plot is really interesting - it's basically just one giant quest to not only find someone but also treasure. Plus, Chakraborty intertwines a unique magical system and beings into the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it all.

I must admit that I loved the little plot twist in this! I obviously won't give anything away, but I thought that was well done, and I love a good turn like that!
