Three Men in a Boat
by Jerome K. Jerome
We had this read to us at school in English lessons and I greatly enjoyed it. I think I also took it out of the library in my teens. For this re-read I decided to listen to this as an audiobook narrated by Ian Carmichael. I found it wonderfully diverting - there are several laugh-out-loud moments and many chuckles as the the three friends take their boat down the Thames.
It’s very surprising to realise that this book was published in 1889. The humour seems timeless and I suppose that’s because Jerome’s humour is all about observation of the human condition. There is also a lot of interest is comparing our modern world and our concerns with that of these young Victorian gentlemen.
