A Triple Knot by Emma Campion
2.0

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm picky about historical fiction these days- I've read enough of it that a book has to stand out in order for me to enjoy it. These books tend to be long, and slow on plot, so character development and description have to be engrossing enough to keep me entertained. Philippa Gregory can still do this more often than not, but I can't think of another straight historical author that I truly love. And there needs to be more to it than romance. These women have to want more than a man in their lives.

So, this book does not rise above, and I think it's a bit below average. The characters didn't stand out as distinct personalities, and there's a lot of info-dumping in the beginning that read as jumping from subject to subject, and was confusing to me. The writing wasn't detailed enough for me to get drawn in, and episodes seemed jerky instead of fluid.

And lots of scenes which could have been interesting looks into characters were glossed over. For example, a birth scene: we begin with Joan lying in and awaiting her birth pains. Turn the page, and it begins: "At last, the moment. The baby cried..." Wow, way to avoid any details whatsoever. That's about how much thought I put into where babies come from as when I was six years old and playing with dolls.

And so, a no go for me.
