Black Boy Out of Time by Hari Ziyad
3.5
challenging emotional reflective slow-paced

The journey of personal and societal progression in this book is beautiful and necessary. The anger in this book resonates with me deeply, and I’m so moved in the intimate ways the author brings us through it.

It’s just… I wanted to be brought through that a bit faster? The book is slow and repetitive. A lot of ideas feel fleshed out in early chapters only to be revisited again later in similar ways.

I craved more structure to the personal reflections, too—more of a story—but it felt like reading someone’s journal in a lot of places. That raw, emotional honesty you can only get writing for yourself.
