I had strange and conflicting feelings about this book, and I believe realistically I would give it a 3.5/5 stars. I can understand why many filed “Quicksilver” under DNF before the halfway point, as I was very tempted.
In the earlier chapters of the book, the narrator is not necessarily someone I liked or related to. Gods help me I may have cracked and lit the book on fire if Saeris made one more mention about how much she hated dresses and wanted to wear pants, even if it were the less feminine option. To me, she felt like a combination of all of the typical quirks of a fantasy FMC…
However, upon meeting several of the other characters, I was enticed to keep reading, and I’m not disappointed that I did. Though it took me a few days to comb through the first half of the book, I devoured the second half in a day, which makes me understand why so many people have recommended it. If you can get past the first half, and get over how slightly obnoxious and whiny the main character was in the first chapters, then this book has a wonderful plot line, interesting magic system, and some well-written spice, that doesn’t dominate over the overarching themes of the book.
Didn’t adore the book, but I did love the characters, and will be buying the second for that!
