The Rape of Nanking
by Iris Chang
I picked up The Rape of Nanking after watching a few documentaries on the topic, thinking I had a decent idea of what to expect, but reading it was a completely different experience. It hit way harder than I thought it would. The way Iris Chang tells the story makes everything feel so real and raw, and honestly, I almost didn’t finish it. It’s incredibly disturbing.
What happened in Nanking was horrifying. The suffering people went through and the things that were done to them are beyond words. It’s a brutal reminder of what can happen during war, especially to civilians who are caught in the middle.
This wasn’t an easy read at all, but I think that’s kind of the point. It’s not supposed to be. It’s powerful, upsetting, and unforgettable; and I’m glad I pushed through it.
