The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

3.0

Ok, not going to lie, this story did NOT go where I was expecting it to! Not that I really envisioned an end goal, but this was definitely not something that would have been in my mind as an explanation.

It's like all three of these books have different genres, not a bad thing, just an observation. First book was 90's Point Horror high school, second book was romance vs what is reality, and this book was like some sort of conspiracy of the ages?

What I didn't like - It just felt like a really strange outcome, with not enough explanation, especially concerning Mara's parents and brother. The first two books had such strong family connections that it was quite jarring that a little
Spoiler'we're off to a retreat, see you never' mind trick
would kind of erase any sort of importance of Mara's family in the story.

Also, even though this is literally a paranormal series with powers and weird things going on, it still felt like a bit of a 'jump the shark' moment when things got revealed. Especially

I liked all the creepy weird stuff going on in the first two books, but this one kind of made all of that irrelevant?

What I did like - I really like Jamie as a character so was glad when he was a pretty integral part of the storyline, I'm also a fan of Daniel so him rocking up and
Spoilerfinally being told everything was about time - I said from the first book that he should have been a confidant, so I'm glad it finally happened!

Less romance was a good point for me, I know not everyone agrees, but I think the second book was a little too 'lets get on a bed and make out'

I was kind of into the flashback type scenes from the furthest back, but then when it got more modern I wasn't as interested

Overall I enjoyed this series, this was a decent enough ending, but I was hoping for something a bit different, again, not sure what I was hoping for, but this wasn't it,sis. Just a bit of a weird one. I'm glad I finally got around to reading this series though, and I'm glad I did it all in one go!
