Was surprised by how little the experiences of being oppressed and discriminated on the basis of race seemed to influence the oppressive actions of the straight characters. Was not expecting the book to be quite as sad as it was. I felt the author's note could have used some explanation on why she thought it was important for her characters to suffer in the specific ways they did and how that didn't reify the homophobia enforced by censorship laws she talked about wrt pulp novels.
