Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews

5.0

OKAY. Here’s the thing with any and all V.C. Andrews books: If you’re not thinking, “Why the hell am I enjoying this?” every time you turn the page/Google what the next book in the series is/order four more of her series on amazon/set your DVR to record each and every terrible Lifetime movie adaptation, then you’re not doing it right.

Andrews 1000% knows how to keep her readers hooked. I’m almost positive she was actually running a scientific experiment to see how many taboo topics an author can throw into a book before we stop reading. The result? THE LIMIT DOES NOT EXIST. (Mean Girls is always relevant.)

This book has EVERYTHING. Incest, abusive parents, sudden deaths, faked deaths, almost deaths, psychological torture, manipulation, creepy mansions, physical abuse, verbal abuse, brainwashing, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!

My mother recommended these books to me when I was in high school. I recently found out that several of my friends also read these because their own mothers’ recommendations. V.C. Andrews is an epidemic and I have no interest in finding a cure (though, I am a bit concerned about these parenting choices). I own six of her book series, but Flowers in the Attic will always be the best.

I lended this series to a friend in college. Her review was perfect: “Never have I been so pissed off at a book...and yet I STILL couldn’t put it down. It was all so terrible...but so, SO great.”

P.S.—The film adaptations of FITA are offensively bad, but does that stop me from watching them every time they’re on HBO or Lifetime? Nope. 💁🏼‍♀️
