Insurgent by Veronica Roth

5.0

I posted this as a comment to a friend and thought I'd add it here in the review section for others to see. This is my overall take on the series so far (books 1 & 2). (No spoilers.)

The first book, Divergent, was selected by a book club host. I probably never would have found out about it if it weren't for her. I don't read much YA and I haven't read much dystopian (though I plan to read more now!), so this series was a bit different for me.

There are several things I like about it. First, the author has created an environment that I found interesting... a walled off city divided into five factions based on their dominating character traits. I won't expand on the concept because that's readily available in product descriptions.

The environment in this story raised some questions and ideas for me about human nature and societal behavior. When a book does this for me, I get excited.

The main character is compelling, of course, because she doesn't fit the mold. I like that she's not totally sure of herself, but keeps moving forward as best she can.

Finally, in both of these books, the author has done a great job pacing the story. She develops the characters and setting through action. There weren't many dull moments (if any). The first book begins at a pivotal moment and everything keeps rolling from there.

As much as the story keeps a good energy throughout the books, Roth manages to still ramp things up in the last 80 pages or so of each book. Stakes are raised, tension builds. In the end of each book, she effectively wraps up the current book while setting up the next. I was left satisfied, yet wanting to read the next one.

Last I heard, the third book is due Fall 2013 and I believe that will be the conclusion of the series.

I highly recommend reading them. In fact, my husband is reading book one now and hasn't been able to put it down.
