eiseneisen 's review for:
Dispatches
by Michael Herr
Bottom Line Review: Probably the best book about war I've ever read. Certainly the book that gives most intimate and comprehensive depiction of the war experience. If you are interested in the Vietnam War, or war as a general subject, this is an absolute must-read.
A Few More Details: Throughout the book there are sentences and groups of sentences that I found incomprehensible. I just didn't get the idea that author Michael Herr was trying to communicate, either because the language/references he uses are specific to the time in which Dispatches was written (approximately 1970), or because the idea itself is just too abstract. But for every such instance there are 5 instances in which he communicates an idea with greater clarity, and I daresay poetry, than I've ever read before.
Interesting Tidbit: Herr co-wrote the scripts for Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket, and many of the most memorable parts of both are contained in this non-fiction book, written years before either film was made.
