Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

4.0

Lynne Harmony has a blue heart(a side effect of a drug they tested to see if it could counteract the infection) and used to be the head of the CDC before the world collapsed under the Scorpius bacterium, which on the very slim chance you survive, it changes you sometimes making you smarter, sometimes making you feral, or maybe a serial killer because it attacks the part of the brain that controls empathy.
Lynne is hiding and looking for a cure so she makes her way to L.A. looking for a secret lab and a man called Jax Mercury who she thinks she can convince to protect her. Jax is a soldier and the head of a group of approx 500 survivors(some who've survived infection and some who haven't been infected) that he is trying to train to help fight, scavenge, etc. The side characters are also interesting.
There are gang wars, scavenging, science and sexy times in here and it was an interesting read, better than I expected actually after reading the prequel first and only being kinda interested in the story.
