This was a Masterclass in Slow Burns. Such a beautiful, well written read. You know that feeling when you're a few pages into the book & you just KNOW that it's going to torture you in the best possible way and you won't be the same after you put it down? That was The Darkest Corner Of The Heart.

The book starts with Maddie, an injured ballerina, on the verge of the rest of her career, seeing her dreams crash as an almost perfunctory injury throws her off course. As this wasn't enough to pile onto a budding 21 year old, tack on a very traumatic past with alcoholism, absent parents - and you're starting a plot with a lot of of promise (and a lot of work to resolve). Enter sexy, introverted, strong physical therapist with a respectable age gap - James - and his own duffle bag of emotional damage to contribute to this heady mixture.

Then of course, there's the slow build tension and attraction - I literally felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster (in the best way possible). I felt my nerves frazzle with the "will they, won't they" .... (spoiler alert: they do) but it all develops with a good pace that takes the reader along; nothing feels rushed.

I'll break it down for you - I loved the focus on their relationship and the story of their characters. There's clearly circumstances and additional characters that all float around them, but the focus is always Maddie & James and their really beautiful love story. There's no miscommunication that results in long drawn out emotional convolutions and drama. Maddie speaks her mind & she seeks help when she needs it, and James learns from her and does the same. They make each other better, in small & steady steps. You start from zero and you slowly ratchet up and suddenly, you're flying down the freeway of love and too emotionally committed to these fictional characters.

Highly HIGHLY recommend. I'm just mad that it sat on my TBR for so long.....
