This is a beautifully written, character driven novel in which doctoral student Gifty confronts her inner conflict between the faith she grew up with and the scientific career she has chosen. Gifty is the daughter of Ghanian immigrants who was raised in the Pentecostal church in Alabama. After losing her older brother to an overdose and watching her mother's struggle with depression, Gifty becomes focused on a career in neuroscience to research addictive behavior and methods to overcome it. This is a non-linear life story in beautiful prose examining struggles with faith and grief and how life experiences shape us.
