The Science of Storytelling by Will Storr
4.0
This is a great nonfiction that discuss how humans use storytelling to make sense of the world and how this informs us about what makes a great story.
My boss recommended this book during discussions about schemas and world views that impact people’s thinking and behaviour. It took my a while to find the time to read this one, and chose to read this whilst I was at home and sick to feel productive.
This book was a light read that touched on psychology and neuroscience. It explained strategies authors use that develop favourable characters, plot lines and endings. These strategies aim to grab the attention of the reader and provide a pleasing experience.
The audience is for writers however I also found this great from a counselling perspective. I connected this to how therapists will use storytelling to make sense with clients about themselves, the relationships and how to navigate their world. Similar strategies provide motivation, increased skills and opportunities for positive changes in their lives.
I recommend this book as an introduction on the importance of storytelling and how to utilise it to create meaning.
