The Goodbye Cat by Hiro Arikawa

3.0

this book was so sweet. I absolutely loved the stories told from a cat narrator and the appreciation for how deeply cats can change their owners lives. As a 2x cat mom I found myself relating to so many of these stories and I adored that 🐈💜

however, I did find this slightly hard to get through. After some reflection on why this may be I think it was simply due to it being a short story collection, which really isn’t my favourite style of writing to read. So if you’re a short story lover - please don’t let my feelings here deter you, you’ll probably love this aspect📖

I also found many of the stories were hit and miss - the titular story “The Goodbye Cat” was my favourite by far. I loved how it tackled the idea of morality and how kids grapple with this through loss of pets. It felt like such an interesting lens to look at morality through and it was really heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

Some other stories were less interesting but still left me satisfied and happy that I read them.
