Brida
by Paulo Coelho
Like most, I loved The Alchemist but dear lord avoid any book written by this man with a woman main character. This and Eleven Minutes were very, very woman-character written-by-a-man feel.
Wanted the same feel as The Alchemist but with a woman exploring magic and spirituality (and not romance). But the entire thing is about soulmates and how if you don’t find yours, your life is meaningless. And that soulmates are specifically a soul split into a man and woman. Only. And that women seek magic to find their soulmate and men, to find power. Barf.
The magus was so creepy to me. And was a creep. He was banished for seducing a young girl and using magic to drive away her boyfriend. And then spends the whole book talking about how sexually attracted he is to Brida.
This book has lines like “He was a man so he must look at her body.”
