Keep Me Safe by Maya Banks

3.0

*I was provided a copy from Avon Romance in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first book to read of Mrs. Banks's books. I'm sad to say that I was not impressed. The story follows the heroine, Ramie St. Claire, who has psychic capabilities, and uses her abilities to help track kidnapping victims. She encounters Caleb Devereaux when he uses her to find his sister. This brief introduction to the two characters left me thinking that Caleb was a straight up selfish ass, while Ramie an idiot. Fast forward a year later and Ramie has found herself in a dangerous predicament that leaves her calling Caleb for help to "rescue" her from a maniac stalker. (Sidenote: Caleb started his own security company once he gets his sister back.) Now Caleb comes riding in on his private jet to save Ramie and keep her hidden away from the crazy man. *eyeroll* Blah blah blah. The maniac has somehow psychically linked himself to Ramie so he knows her every move, thought, etc. TECHNICALLY Caleb can't do anything to keep her safe, well until the last 20 pages when someone on his security team figures it out first. Then add to the mix his obnoxious bratty sister is is anything but warm and fuzzy to Ramie (because Ramie knows EXACTLY what happened to the sister, she experienced it all) when you would THINK Ramie would be the first person the sister could trust to talk things through with. Like "oh wow you know exactly what I went through, let's help each other to heal." Nope. Bratty woman. I could not stand her character at all, the sister that is. Then the last 50 pages you get this plot twist (I totally saw coming) and all hell breaks lose. I will admit the speed of the suspense in the last 100 pages or so was great! If it had been like that the whole book, maybe I wouldn't have been as annoyed. Lucky for you Maya wraps up the story in a nice sweet little bow.

I did realize throughout the story it seemed Maya would get sidetracked and not complete a circle every once in while. For example, there's a sex scene where Caleb & Ramie are going to town then at the end "he slides off the condom." WAIT. What???? When did he even put the condom on? Because an earlier sex scene he was adamant about not having sex again without a condom. So.... yeah. Another time she goes into detail about them taking their clothes off to sleep naked together for the fact that Ramie runs cold and Caleb is like her personal furnace, and then HELLO!! They are woken up for a major suspense scene and he's climbing out of a window and tossing Ramie down a story for his brother to catch her. HOLD ON. So are they still naked? Is he tossing his naked girlfriend out the window into his brother's arms or did she at least have on underwear? When did he put on clothes? Especially in THAT particular scene, clothes would be extremely important. I don't know. It just seems like this story was rushed. Or half-assed. Just not my favorite. Honestly don't think I'll be reading the other two in this series. Sorry Maya.
