katerowan 's review for:
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret
by Judy Blume
So I finally figured out the references to "We must - we must - we must increase our bust!" I literally laughed out loud.
Margaret is going into sixth grade and her parents are moving her out of the city and into the suburbs (side note: the whole time I kept thinking of the HIMYM episode about how much Ted hates New Jersey). She's trying to navigate her family, making friends, religion, puberty, school, boy/girl stuff, and all the things that come along with being a 12 year old girl.
Oh my goodness this was adorable. I'm pretty sure Margaret's thoughts were the thoughts of every girl growing up. So good. So real. I loved that Margaret and her parents were well-rounded. And they had a good relationship! I really liked how honest Judy Blume was about all the things that are so confusing about being a girl of that age. Margaret's anxiety over her period, and Judy Blume's honesty in writing about it, were so amazing to actually see in print. Even now, this book is important.
Adorable. I'm loving this Judy Blume read.
