Jeweled Fire
by Sharon Shinn
I love Sharon Shinn. Her writing style makes it so easy for me to picture the settings in her books and this installment is no exception. Elemental Blessings is one of my favorite fantasy universes which has a unique underlying magical system that is well blended with realistic elements. It is much more subtle than some other series but just as interesting.
I also like Shinn's series format. After characters are introduced, each book in the series follows a different character through the world timeline. This book follows Corene, princess of Welce, at age 17, where as we first meet Corene in Troubled Waters at age 11 through Zoe's perspective. While I miss the past POV characters, I like the way this format moves the world ahead and allows the reader to get a better understanding of the depth of all the characters. Shinn is also skilled at reminding the reader of the events of past books without smashing it into your faces or getting trapped in long expositions.
I will say that this book was a little predictable but completely enjoyably so. Some details I didn't see coming while I rode along with great satisfaction as other predictions I made were fulfilled. Some of the other characters didn't make as many appearances as I would have liked but this is a well written and well designed series that I hope Shinn continues.
