Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn
3.0

"Another pint of heart's blood... Fortunate that he has so great a heart to spare it."

This wasn't my favourite by Kate Quinn but I enjoyed it all the same. Her historical fiction is always so rich, so realistic. I don't believe I'll ever read a book of hers and not feel as though I've found myself in the midst of the era she's writing about.

The interweaving plotlines in this novel were one of my favourite parts. The characters are all so complex, their arcs so compelling. I didn't like all of them - in fact, I liked very few - but watching the plotline come together from all angles only strengthened my regard for my favourites and my hatred of my least favourites. Paulinus, my beloved...

As always, Quinn's writing is magnificent. No flaws there. I don't believe I'll be reading the rest of the series purely because I am now on the tail end of my Gladiator era, but this gave me everything I wanted, truthfully. Three stars only because it wasn't as dear to me as some of her other works, but I did enjoy it all the same. Highly recommend for anyone even remotely interested in Ancient Rome - I know so much more about it now than I did before and yet never felt like I was having facts shoved down my throat. Kate Quinn you will always be famous.
