Giving it four stars so I don't drag down the rating. I thought this was a totally fine book. I liked Amari. I empathized with her feeling like she didn't belong--at both of her schools--and I admired her persistence to find her lost brother. I'm not a huge fan of mixing sci-fi and fantasy, so I guess the special tech of the story didn't appeal to me. I would've preferred if it was a 100% supernatural institute without any MIB-style tech, but that's just me. I also guess I wished there had been more friendship in the book (more friends for Amari to meet and get to know). Unfortunately, the book is largely about her not belonging, and other people's cruel judgements of her, which means she has to suffer alone a lot. I'm sure the series picks up in the sequels if the covers are anything to go by, but I wasn't locked in enough to continue.
