Spare by Prince Harry

emotional informative reflective sad slow-paced

3.0

For a memoir it's incredibly long, I found myself constantly going "how much longer is there," and getting disappointed by the length. That being said, it's certainly not a bad book - Harry's got a terrific ghost writer, and his narration is really good.

Some memoirs I would recommend regardless of topic, but this isn't one of them. Especially with it's length, it's the sort of book I think is really only enjoyable if you're interested in Harry, the Royal family, and their relationship with the media. Harry's relationship with the media is the core part of this book, and the way being raised so scrutinized in the public eye (while dealing with debilitating grief) affects someone is really eye opening. If you're looking for a book criticising the monarchy as an institution though, this isn't it.

There's definitely some things in it that I'd have rather not known (Harry's frostbitten appendage is one that is I'd agree with the media coverage is pretty tmi), but it's no where near as scandalous as a lot of the media coverage is suggesting. Overall, it's a sad coming of age story about a kid who lost his mum.
