elli143 's review for:
Heir of Sea and Fire
by Patricia A. McKillip
The first book in this series focused primarily on Morgon, the Star-Bearer, and I found myself struggling to understand both the riddles he was trying to solve and the world in which he lived. This book, which focuses primarily on Raederle, was just as confusing in the beginning, but because the characters were familiar this time around it was easier to understand what was happening.
By the end of this book, I'm now obsessed and can't wait to see how the trilogy ends. This definitely seems like a series that will be best appreciated on the second or third read. I found myself flipping back and forth between the books re-reading certain passages to make sense of what was going on, and from what I can tell the author did a masterful job of mapping out the course of this story from the very beginning. Passages that made no sense on the first read made a lot of questions fall into place on the second. There are almost two journeys in this series - one that the characters are going through, and another that the reader is going through, trying to make sense of it all. Can't wait for the next one.
