I’m struggling to know what to say about this book! It was absolutely surprising and strange and unlike any other book I’ve read. I do want to strongly push back against the comparison of it to Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet because the flaws of the characters in this book run so much darker than any Becky Chambers character, but there is a large cast of characters here, ranging from aliens to demons. And while the book sincerely triumphs its trans main character, it is very worth noting that transphobia and anti-trans violence (and racism and homophobia) are portrayed on-page quite a few times. But the story is unique and absurd in a darkly delightful way, and it’s worth the read for sure.
Graphic: Transphobia
Moderate: Body shaming, Sexual violence, Sexual harassment, Sexual assault, Racism, Racial slurs, Homophobia, Dysphoria, and Deadnaming
