Severed Heart: The Birth of a Warrior by Kate Stewart
4.5
Book & Audiobook Review
Narrated by: Grayson Owens & Leila Allarie
Let me be honest…I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. I thought this was going to be another “Ravenhood retelling” from a different POV, but Severed Heart is so much more than that. It’s Tyler and Delphine’s story, and it stands firmly on its own.
While there are moments that overlap with the Ravenhood trilogy, the heart of this book is in how it begins…from their childhoods. Seeing what shaped Tyler and Delphine, how they experienced life, loss, and love before their worlds collided. iIt completely captured my heart. Their connection was beautiful, raw, and at times heartbreaking.
So why not a full five stars? For me, Delphine’s repeated pushback against Tyler started to feel a bit overdone. It made sense for her character, and it didn’t pull me out of the story…but emotionally, it hit a point where I just wanted relief. I wanted Tyler to be happy. And right now, he’s not. He’s sad and broken and I felt every bit of that.
And the audiobook? Phenomenal. Grayson Owens (as Tyler) was a revelation. His performance was so powerful I immediately started searching for more of his audiobooks. And the Leila Allarie (as Delphine) Absolutely nailed the accent, tone, and emotion. It was so believable, especially her struggle with language. Their chemistry in narration matched the depth of the story perfectly.
This book made me ache in the best way. I’m now anxiously waiting for Birds of a Feather because I need to see if Tyler gets the happy ending he deserves.
