I’ve read this book a few times before and loved it, but I wanted to give it another shot now that I’m a bit older.
The world-building and overall descriptions were so whimsical - I especially loved listening to the audiobook vs reading in print because it helped me picture everything so clearly. It was a great contrast to the tragic situations that our main characters find themselves in. I’ve seen some criticism about Cathnot being able to stand up to her parents , but that felt very realistic to me. I think anyone who’s experienced similar situations would feel the same. I also loved how every plot point woven throughout the story was neatly tied up at the end - it was so cool seeing everything come full circle. And since this is a reread I noticed many small details I didn’t the first time around.
My main criticism, if any, was that the romance between Cath and Jest felt a little rushed. I loved the way they yearned for each other in the second half of the book but I wished there were more cutesy moments establishing their relationship first. I knowthe ending is tragic, but too much of their relationship was spent away from each other 🥹 .
