One Moment in Time by Shari Low

So bad! Not sure I will pick up another book by this author.

Premise is of daughters planning a surprise renewal of vows for their parents. They want to reunite them with their friends. They identify these people through a picture they found. The daughters have never heard of these particular friends and there is a reason for this. One can imagine why.

The worst cliché in this novel, is that one of the parent’s friends ends up getting together with her son’s friend. So an 18 year difference. That’s not the problem, the problem is that we can see that coming from the moment the story begins. The fact that the mother shares such intimate and close “friendship“ with this friend of her son is what gives it away. This part of the story is very cloying. In fact, the whole story is filled with clichés and too much sweetness.

I don’t mind a lovely story. I can’t stand an unbelievable story. The unbelievable part comes in the interactions between the characters. Everyone is so sweet to one another. Even the one father, who is a jerk, is “sweet” in his jerkiness. It’s cloying.

The writing is very middle school like. It lacks depth. The descriptions of things like what people are wearing go on and on. Every detail goes on and on. The story starts with the Brenda, the mother of the daughters, wanting to leave her husband of 30 years. The reason she wants to leave him is because she is bored and she wants excitement. Whoopty do. The woman is unbearable. I disliked her so much that I wanted her husband to leave her and leave her at the side of the road for all I cared. The other older woman, Eileen, is also unbearable. I could care less for any of these two women.

The only character I somewhat liked was Zara, one of the daughters. She was somewhat likable. The son, Aiden, was also somewhat likable. And surprise, they end up together! The way they come together and the ending in this regard is so cliché.

I really don’t know why I kept reading this book. I’ve been struggling to get into a story recently and so I didn’t want to give up. I figured the book would have some redeeming qualities and I was very wrong.
