Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

5.0

Under the Whispering Door, tells the story of our main character Wallace, who is an incredibly bitter man who has got himself into some bad habits. However when he dies suddenly and is picked up by Mei, a reaper in the afterlife, so begins.a journey of finding yourself and your purpose.

Wallace was an incredibly unlikeable character from page 1 and definitely did take a lot of page time for me to be able to connect to him. With the help of our amazing side characters we really start to see the softer side to Wallace- mainly through his developing relationship with Hugo.
Mei, Nelson, Apollo and most importantly Hugo made for a great cast of characters and really emphasised the beauty of friendship and found families.
Klune has a remarkable ability to be able to write with such charm and character whilst also contemplating serious topics such as depression, suicide etc.

My only slight critique, is that this book definitely feels like a carbon copy of The House in the Cerulean Sea, both in terms of plot, main characters and the love story. However I loved that book too, so no complaints.
