Fruits Basket, Vol. 4 by Natsuki Takaya

4.0

4.5 stars out of 5

Volume 4 of Fruits Basket might be the best one yet so far. The first three volumes were all pretty good, but this fourth volume surpasses them in every single way. Why? Well, let’s see why in this review!

Momiji and Haru transfer to the same school that Tohru, Yuki and Kyo go to, and things happen. We also later get introduced to Akito Sohma soon afterwards. This will be a character to keep an eye on for sure later on. We also get the introduction of another Sohma in this volume as well, Yuki’s brother and the snake, Ayame Sohma…and well, Yuki isn’t too happy to see his brother.

And then…chapter 23 happens. The chapter that turns Fruits Basket from a really good manga to an amazing manga. This chapter explains Momiji’s backstory, and it isn’t a happy one. It’s incredibly moving, and really well told.

Afterwards, Tohru, Yuki and Kyo, alongside Tohru’s two friends, Uotani and Hanajima, go visit the grave of Tohru’s mother. This was an interesting chapter to end the volume.

This volume of Fruits Basket is amazing. I’m glad I didn’t take a one day break to read this one. I cannot wait to see how the rest of this holds up on a reread. See you then!
