The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

4.0

It’s hard to describe my feelings toward this book. Gory, and mature and honest and loud and crass. I couldn’t help but get sucked into the world. The author is an attorney so the witty and intelligent back and forth dialogue from the characters was very enjoyable. I found myself caring for this plain protagonist—the fantasy trope of an plain, ugly heroine but I truly believed she was a plain piece of paper and I adored her.

I liked the world and it’s history and magic although weird? It’s fantasy but they mention America and computers but it’s like an old timey kindgom with swords and military but there’s Lord of the Rings books in this world? I’m just confused is this an alternate reality? After America? Is America long lost for centuries? Confusion. Does this take place in the 30s in Europe? I don’t know.

I have the whole trilogy and don’t think it’d be a waste of time to finish the series. I care about the characters and their weird kingdom and world. I’m interested to see how it ends and where it goes.
