austriana 's review for:
Shadow Study
by Maria V. Snyder
Shadow Study is a great addition to the Study series. It took me a little bit longer than I would have liked to get into it, but once I finally did, it was a fast-paced, entertaining read. The removal of Yelena's magic adds an interesting layer to the story. Perhaps the only fault in the book is that, because we are switching viewpoints between Yelena, Valek and Janco so quickly and often, it's harder to become immersed in the story. (That being said, Valek's backstory was an amazing addition, and I definitely think there's a hint of a future romance between Janco and Little Miss Assassin.)
One final note...and the thing that pushed this from 3 to 4 stars for me...the betrayal at the end of the book was unexpected but organic and unsurprising (when given thought). It was very true to the characters, which I appreciated. I'm definitely looking forward to finding out what happens!
Thanks to Harlequin via Netgalley for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
ETA: There isn't a lot of action in Shadow Study. There's a little bit, obviously, but it's a lot more exposition and setup for future books. But the book doesn't suffer for it.
