The Siren
by Kiera Cass
I'm not sure how to express my deep dislike for this book.
I wasn't expecting to like it - this is the author who wrote The Selection, which was boring and predictable and all round dumb.
Still, I thought maybe it would be a fun read, since there was some sort of fun to be had in The Selection. But nooooooo, The Siren is very, very problematic.
I don't really want to write a long, angry rant so here are my main issues with it:
Insta-love. Oh, the joy. They spend no more than a week together and are suddenly in truuu wuuuv. It felt very forced, and it was so uninteresting.
Bland characters. There was no one who felt real. They were all one personality trait, placed in the story to either conveniently move the plot along or to just be there. The two main characters (I forget their names...) were utterly dull.
Poor use of mythology. This books potential laid in the mythology of the sirens - but it was all dumped in the trash to make room for the *wonderful* romance. When there was explanations, it was very info-dumpy and not well executed. The character of the ocean was interesting at first, but very quickly got mixed up in the ball of weirdness that the mythology created. (This probably makes no sense - but I don't think I can explain without spoilers.)
This is where it really hit me -Literally approves of MURDER. Again I can't explain this clearly, but it presents murder as basically a way to overcome and move on in life. It was ridiculous and horrifying. It was never resolved.
(Note: it is possible that I may have missed an entire section where it explains how that's not the case, since I listened to the audio book and it wasn't exactly engaging. But I don't think there was anything like that.)
Don't recommend this at all. Stay clear.
