I’m having a difficult time rating this. The world, the kindred and descended, the complex politics, the secondary characters are all wonderful - and Luther is a saint, but I couldn’t stand Diem and thought she made the worst decisions possible during most of the book. She did not learn or grow. It took me a long time to finish because I kept putting it down out of frustration with her stupidity. She finally, finally pulls herself together almost 90% of the way through the book. Then her mother completely screws everything up, all Diem’s work toward peace between peoples, having the descended trust her, everything, in the last few pages. Once she’d finally figure she had to acknowledge she was also part descended, I was looking forward to her heading into the third book riding a wave of embracing her power. Now I don’t know if I’ll even bother with the third book after hating this ending...annd the main character. And Diem and Luther? He’s done nothing but help and support her for two books, while she dithers over Henri who wants her dead. There’s nothing but tension between them with no progress. There’s slow burn and then there’s you’re an idiot.
