Thousand Autumns: Qian Qiu (Novel) Vol. 1
by Meng Xi Shi
Enjoyed this one, that is, enough to finish it. I like the premise set up in the blurb about a righteous, noble man who falls from grace and on premise I’m someone who loves a book with political intrigue and plottings.
However, I’m not too sure how to feel about this one. The writing isn’t very good in my opinion, there’s a lot of repetition of stuff we already know. Things that have already happened instead of being simply alluded to are retold in full which is just jarring and annoying. There’s also a lot of long fight scenes which I don’t know that they add much too the plot really, and because the writing is quite flat these long ass fight scenes don’t come alive like they should. I also don’t feel attached to the main characters yet as there’s some crucial stuff that goes by so quickly with the way time movese.g. a character gets their memories back randomly, like no build up, no hint, nothing for us on his feelings when this happens
It’s a lot of repetitive, heavy handed info-dumping without the main plot/ goal being clear. The second lead is supposed to be doing some devious scheme but he in really doesn’t do any of the trying to taint Shen Qiao. But I’ll give the this first volume the benefit of the doubt as being down to world building and setting the scene for the rest of the story to take shape.
