Let me start the review of this book by saying this: our MC is a total Gary Stu. BUT! The writing surrounding this aspect makes his complete surpassing competence on everything he ever touches, handles, reads, or does completely forgivable.
This is a great book. It’s a great mashup of dark academia, action, mythos, and it’s super thrilling. Islington’s writing is incredibly immersive and he is a fantastic world builder.
There were a few twists one could see from miles away, but they moved the story along well and all of the adversity that the MC faces is grueling, scary, and the friends he makes along the way carry their flaws well. I burned through this book in a few sittings - the size of it was intimidating at first but the writing is easily digestible without being juvenile and the story and characters take such a hold of you that you won’t want to put the book down. Looking forward to the next in the series!
