What's beautiful about this story is it revolves around trans women who are full, messy people beyond their trans-ness. The arrival of Abagail in Mitchell, South Dakota irrevocably alters the tapestry of the town and its deeply interconnected residents. Being trans, and more specifically radically different ways of living while trans, is the lens through which we see our protagonists change and change others. This sounds like only a deep character study, but the ploy creeps up on you and crescendos explosively. Treat yourself, read this, and be prepared to feel things.
