The Secret History by Donna Tartt
4.0
“I hope we're all ready to leave the phenomenal world, and enter into the sublime?”
I liked this book more than I expected to like it. I had heard mixed reviews, mainly about the characters being “insufferable” or “pretentious”—all of which is true, but they weren’t as “insufferable” or “pretentious” as I thought they’d be, I guess. I was hoping for a bit more Greek and a bit more of Julian (the classics professor), and I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. Overall, though, I can see why this book is so popular, and why it’s influenced a number of other works (especially other, more recent “dark academia” books). Donna Tartt is a good writer, and I look forward to reading her work again.
