The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie
Junior chronicles his life as a 14 year old Indian teen living on a reservation. He makes a big change by choosing to go to a white school to receive a better education and this choice creates many ripples in his community pond.
In many ways Junior is just like other teens who crush on girls, love playing basketball, and worry about fights with their best friends.
I listened to the audio book version of this story and it was really one of the best audio books I've ever heard. There's so many shades to this story: humor, change, enthusiasm, grief, and hard truth to name a few. The author perfectly captures each of these emotions and uses his voice to translate them to perfection.
This book frequently ends up on banned books lists, often one of the top ten, but it is one of those banned books that's full of the best stuff on earth if you approach it with an open mind.
Recommended for teens and up.
