Ross Poldark by Winston Graham

5.0

A historical Drama about a rugged, handsome brooding
soldier trying to find love again?!Let’s just say I ate this right up!

We are introduced to Ross Poldark who is just returning home to Cornwall from America following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. Upon his arrival he discovers news of his fathers death and Ross has been left with barley anything and if things couldn’t get worse he discovers the women he loves is now engaged to his more wealthy cousin Francis.

Now heart broken and lower than ever before, he must pick up the pieces. Lonely, he works through his sorrow. As he tries to mend every part of his life you get to see him find new love as well as fight feelings of his past love.

This has become one my all time favorite books. The characters are so interesting and painfully human. It’s rare to find a story that uplifts you while at the same is conflicting.

I love Ross Poldark with my whole heart! He has all the means to be the hero and over all good guy, but then reveals his many flaws. which for me makes him an even more like-able protagonist.

This story isn’t trying to depict these perfect people with minimal imperfections, these characters are raw, realistic human beings which makes the story so much more compelling. I’ve learned so much about the human experience through this story. This is how characters should be written.

Graham takes risks by having his characters think painfully realistic, making the reader have to really question their feelings about them. Once you think you understand the character Graham throws something in the story that makes you question everything! It’s common to say “ we love them despite their flaws” but I love these characters because of them. I’m so attached to these characters and the story! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
