The Ninth Metal by Benjamin Percy
2.0
I really would have DNF’d this but by the time I realized what I was reading I was already 75% through and I just can’t not finish it after all that. The scene where the “good” cop and the “good” billionaire are in the car and teaming up is like watching an object relational retelling of Batman’s internal life—it’s fantastical in an offensively silly type way. Just like Batman (who’s invoked later on in the book, matter of fact!), they’re positioned as “one of us.” They’re not. That’s just one specific gripe I had about this book; there are more gripes to be griped, though, for sure. To have SO many interesting characters to work from and nearly no actual character development is shameful. And that’s a shame, because I typically love this genre.
